About the Project
Our assignment was to translate a 20 year old brick & mortar business into an online commercial hub. Salon Renz is a staple in Prince George’s County, MD for classic and beautiful hair. With the influx of mobile stylists, online hair providers and YouTube hair styling sensations, Salon Renz wanted to elevate its brand persona. They hired us to create a professional + fresh e-commerce website for its progressive business.
It’s validation when a business where you’ve been a customer becomes your client. That’s our experience with Salon Renz. Owner, Derrenzo Hines, wanted to infuse life into his family-owned business and bring their current brand up-to-date. With the build of Salon Renz II, Hines sought a design that was feminine, modern and edgey. Using Stacey Dash and his newly built salon as the inspiration, we used the parallax technology, clean lines and clear typeface to create the modern feel; and a soft yet bold color palette, rose elements and plenty pictures of beautiful hair to give Salon Renz the makeover and growing success it desired.
We always ask our clients who is their ideal celebrity client as a way to brainstorm about what that particular celeb would appreciate about a certain brand. For Salon Renz Owner, he chose Stacey Dash. He was inspired by the cleanness and “All-American-Girl-Next-Door” look of Stacey Dash (of “Clueless” fame). She represents a bubbly, professional, well-dressed and well-coiffed ideal celebrity client. As we looked deeper into Salon Renz’s inspiration, we started to see brand patterns among the ads for hair care company, Mizani. Salon Renz avidly uses Mizani on its clients so it’s a no-brainer that the company would be among its inspiration. We liked the clean typography and layout and realized that was the direction Salon Renz wanted its word structure resulting in only clean lines among the typefaces selected for Salon Renz. Lastly, the salon renovations actually inspired our brand design as well. Salon Renz’s new interior (see above) notably hot muted pink. Using this color as a base, we choose complimentary colors to complete the palette. We also used the fresh pinkish/reddish roses in Salon Renz as brand accents. Salon Renz is heavy on social media so we designed a few social media templates that can also double as thank you or appointment cards.
Salon Renz is in no rush to slow down and recently renovated and relaunched its second location in Maryland.
Derrenzo said, “It’s perfect.”
